Problem:
- inappropriate irrigation practices salinated the soils
- brown plant hoppers destroyed 50% of paddy and wheat crops.
Farmers combined traditional and modern knowledge:
- spread gypsum, built bunds, leached the soil to reduce salinity
- used Neem, rice husk, organic manure to reduce spread of pests
Impact:
- reclaimed over 68,000 hectares
- reduced losses from brown plant hoppers to 2%
- after five years, yields and incomes had risen by 60%
Sodic Lands Reclamation Project in India builds on farmers’ traditional practices to increase production
