Sampling in the vertical direction
Must sample proportionately with depth
(Do not use trowels at the surface)
Cores:
- Usually better than pits for proportional sampling
- Soil will slop into tops of bucket augers - need to “roll” them to get slop out
- Will not work in rocky soils
Pits:
- Can be difficult to get straight walls (especially in rocky soils)
- Can be difficult to sample proportionately with depth
